As I lift the lid The Smell of Cedar Overtakes me After all these years The tiny blanket Still remains Stained with tears Swollen with muted cries Swaddling the ghost Of an innocence lost To be born of this Is to be given To the dark To the silence To the footsteps To the breathing To the places Your mind takes you To escape To not feel To lose yourself To a life Of walls Silence Darkness Lonely footsteps And words unspoken I close the lid Tell the man With the truck To take everything As I walk away The smell of cedar Remains As always A haunting reminder Of someone Who was once Just a little kid
This is a poignant and movement slice of nostalgia. Nothing, it seems, is truly left behind.

Oh man… love this one. Sometimes it hurts more to hang on to the reminders. I feel that way about certain things 🙏

Why do you keep that darker tone of your poems? I mean, it is nice, but it does get hard from time to time.

Now that is an interesting question. One I would have to think about. I don’t set out with any tone in mind, they just work out the way they do.

It is often easy to trigger memories with sights and sounds but an unforgettable scent can be just as strong of a reminder. Great poem!

It is amazing how most of our nostalgia is tethered to sounds and fragrances. This poem is a gentle reminder of that. Loved it 🙂
