If I could have seen
Known this, years before
When I had nothing
No color, only sound
Echoing throughout, between
Innocence in the past tense
Uninvited and unwelcome
With more loss to come
Before we understand
The crippling effects
Of double digits and time
Old bones would be known
Soon enough
But not soon enough
To prepare a place
At the table
For our new friends
Regret, loss, guilt
The door open
They fill the room
Hung from ceilings
-The broken
Taped to windows
-The forgotten
Nailed to walls
-The persecuted
And in this full house
We wither, together
Growing colder
Than before

“Innocence in the past tense”… oh, this poem got me…every single word…sad, beautiful and heartbreakingly true…😔😔😔

You express so well the human condition on both the interpersonal and much wider levels, nationwide.
Our new friends, for failure to connect with each other, despite shared experiences over time — regret, loss, guilt.
The victims, collateral damage of our lack of compassion and empathy – “growing colder / than before” — the broken, the forgotten, the persecuted.
Thank you ❤

Wow. I really love this. I was going to say my favorite line but that was like most of the poem. So I’ll just say, yes, I love this.
