A Little Longer

I’m still here
I walk these halls
A thousand times
Waiting
For a glimpse of you
I watch
Feel you dream of me
Through restless nights
I drop pieces of myself
Like breadcrumbs
Hoping you’ll find
Your way back
As you light a candle
To put in the window
It’s true
We’re never really gone
Can you feel me
Your resting eyes
Now, hold no secrets
As the last of it
Trails from your pillow
Soft and forgiving
My heart still breaks
Every time
I look at you
I could spare us both
But cannot
Walk away, I remain
By your side
Still
For another day
So I can steal
One more lifetime
With you

  1. Such haunting imagery here, River. That candle in the window and ‘we’re never really gone’. Your words conjure an evocative scene that’s imbued with emotion. It reminded me of Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’, and it could easily be the basis for a movie – a supernatural love story. It certainly gave me goosebumps…

  2. Great ending, great beginning, and overall flows very well.

The only area for improvement “might” be the flow of these lines. They felt a little choppy and seemed to break the flow with the other lines:

    Trails from your pillow

      1. I could be wrong, but there are a few lines there in the middle where the flow wasn’t as strong.

Often in one of my columns, I have written some great sentences, but I later realize they don’t flow with the other paragraphs.

It is painful cutting quality writing, but often necessary.
