To Stray

Clandestine visions offered

Of an eternity swept under

The rug with fanciful assurance

Too late, in the end

To crawl out from under

The weight of the impulse

That clicks us forward

Toward inevitable suffering

And destruction of the true

Message printed on the heart

And flesh of affirmed salvation

Chewed and torn by the teeth

Of those who revel in the erasure

Of our calling to embrace the hand

That threatens to illuminate

The narrow path waiting

Beneath our feet

  1. Wow, River, fantastic. I’m not supposed to be blogging right now with just a week to go on my dissertation it’s meant to be head firmly down, but I couldn’t resist this one. Beautifully crafted poem, and well said.
